KABUL was better than it had been 10 years ago and his country was committed to helping them create a better future for themselves.
In a statement on the occasion of international women’s day, the US envoy said approximately 37 percent of the nearly 7 million students enrolled in primary and secondary schools in Afghanistan were girls.
“Thousands of Afghan women attend university. Afghanistan has one woman governor and one district governor; and recently elected the first woman Mayor in Daykundi Province. There are three Cabinet ministers and approximately 120 women judges now, and about 27 percent of parliamentarians are women.,” he said. “These are real accomplishments, and looking towards the future, it is important that Afghan women and men work together to make continued progress.”
He said many Afghan women had seized the new opportunities the past decade had offered. As a result, he said Afghanistan has been transformed.
“Despite hardship and obstacles, women are forging ahead and are making their voices heard everywhere in Afghanistan. As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, the United States is committed to helping Afghan women create a better future for themselves, their families, their communities and their country.”
