JALALABAD (PAN): The 116th death anniversary of a prominent Islamic scholar Syed Jamaluddin Afghan was observed in eastern Nangarhar province on Saturday.
The anniversary was marked by the Nihad Jawanan-i-Musulman, a youth organization, with the organization chairman Dr. Rahmatullah Zahid saying their aim was to bring into the acknowledge of the young generation the achievements of their legends.
He said similar gatherings would be organized in other provinces to remember Jamaluddin Afghan who was noted for the middle path that he took between traditionalism and modernism.
Commonly known as Al-Afghani (1838/1839 – March 9, 1897), Syed Jamaluddin Afghan was a political activist and Islamic ideologist in the Muslim world during the late 19th century, particularly in the Middle East, South Asia and Europe.
One of the founders of Islamic Modernism, he has been described as “less interested in theology than he was in organizing a Muslim response to Western pressure.
