HERAT CITY (PAN): The governor has warned district chiefs in eastern Herat province of dismissing them if failed to prevent poppy crop cultivation in their respective areas, his spokesman said on Monday.

Muhiuddin Noori said the governor had also warned district administrative and police chiefs of their introduction to judiciary organs if the illicit crops were found grown in areas falling in their jurisdiction.

Official notifications had already been issued to all 15 district chiefs, he said.

The stern warning comes after the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reported increase in poppy cultivation  in Herat this year.

The crop was grown last year over nearly two acres of land in the province, but authorities said they had eradicated the crop before it could be harvested.
