Gold rates plunge, dollar down against afghani

KABUL): The prices of gold fell and that of diesel jumped in Kabul markets during the outgoing week, when rates of other daily-use commodities stayed stable, retailers sad on Thursday.

One litre of diesel was sold for 58afs  against its last week’s 56afs. However, the same amount of petrol stayed stable at 57afs, said a filling station worker in the Taimani neighbourhood, Mohammad Javed.

One gram of Arabian gold declined from 2,350afs to 2,300afs and the Iranian variety from 2,000afs to 1,900afs, said a jeweler in the Lycee-i-Maryam neighbourhood, Abdul Basir, who linked the decline to international market trends.

Moneychanger Ahmad Shah said the buying rate of a US dollar was 53.20afs, while 1,000 Pakistani rupees accounted for 532afs. Last week’s exchange value of the dollar stood at 53.80afs and 1,000 Pakistani rupees at 530afs.

A 24-kilogram bag of Pakistani rice cost 16,80afs, a 50-kg of Pakistani four was sold for 1,150afs and price of the same quantity of sugar worked out at 1700afs, registering no change in their rates, the Food Traders’ Union chief said.

Haji Fazl Rahman told Pajhwok Afghan News a 5-kg tin of Momin ghee was sold for 400afs, a kilo of African black tea for 200afs and the same quantity of Indonesian green tea for 175afs.

But wholesale prices varied from retail rates in parts of the city. Khan Ali, a shopkeeper in the Karta-i-Seh area, sold a 24-kg sack of Pakistani rice for 1900afs and a 50-kg bag of Pakistani sugar for 2,000afs.

He sold the same amount of Pakistani flour for 1,300afs, a 5-kg tin of ghee for 460afs, a kilo of African back tea for 270afs and Indonesian green tea for 200afs.

A kilogram of liquefied gas priced at 45afs, the same as last week’s, said Ahmad Sharif, a dealer in Taimani neighborhood.

The price of per 560 kilograms of peeled oak was worked out at 7,000afs and the same amount of cedar at 6,800 afghanis, registering no change, said a stall owner in Dasht-i-Barchi area, Haji Sultan.
