GHAZNI CITY (PAN): About 5,2800 seedlings would be planted as part of a spring tree plantation drive that got underway in the Andar district of southern Ghazni province on Thursday, an official said.

“Not a single plant has been sown in the district over the past one decade,” said the district chief, Mohammad Qasim Desiwal, who inaugurated the drive.

He said the campaign was being supported by the irrigation department and local traders and that other provincial departments had pledged their cooperation.

“This campaign is being extended to other districts,” Irrigation Director Shafiq Ahmad told the inauguration ceremony. He said hundreds of youth were engaged in the plantation drive.

“Improved security can help involve local residents in the tree plantation programme,” resident Javed said. He said newly-planted trees should not ignored and be looked after until they grew strong.
