A grant contract to the effect was signed between Executive Director of Breshna Shirkat Abdul Razzaq Samadi and Joji Tokeshi, ADB country director for Afghanistan in Kabul.
Under the project, a 100-km line of 500 kilovolts will be extended from Turkmenistan to Shiberghan, the capital of Jawzjan province, and Andkhoi district of Faryab province.
Samadi told Pajhwok Afghan News extension of a 220-kilovolt line — measuring 142 km — from Shiberghan to Mazar-i-Sharif and establishment of substations in Andkhoi and Shiberghan were part also of the project.
The project would be completed in 2016, he said, adding that Afghanistan currently imported 80 percent of power from neighbours. More than 800 megawatts are imported from Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
