KABUL), an official said on Monday.

The ISAF.

Dominic Medley told reporters in Kabul the alliance was confident that the 352,000-strong Afghan force would be able to provide security across the country after 2014.

He said: “They are capable because they are doing that job now as outlined in the transition process. And they will continue to be capable because they will have the support of that new NATO mission.”

Almost two years ago, President Hamid Karzai announced the first group of areas, 25 percent of the Afghan population, to enter transition. Ahead of the Chicago Summit, the president unveiled the third tranche of transition — 75 percent of the population.

“Now, with four transition announcements to date, and two years later, the Afghan National Security Forces are taking the lead for security where 87% of the Afghan population lives,” Medley said, adding the proportion would soon move to 100 percent.
