JALALABAD (PAN): About 91 young men on Monday donated blood to thalassemia patients at a zonal hospital in eastern Nangarhar province, official said.
Members the information department’s youth wing gave 500cc of blood, said Matiuallah Ahmadzai, one of the donors who added their gesture was aimed to help thalassemia patients.
At least 20 of 400 registered thalassemia patients visit the hospital daily for treatment, he said, complaining most health centers faced a shortage of blood.
A thalassemia patient needs blood transfusion twice a month, according to Ahmadzai.
One of the donors from Behsud district, Obaidullah, urged the people for donating blood to thalassemia patients.
Civil Hospital Director Dr. Humayun Zahir appreciated the youth’s gesture and said the blood donated by them would save many patients. A thalassemia hospital in the eastern zone would open soon, he said.
The disease can be cured with the help of bone marrow transplant which is not possible in Afghanistan, doctors say. Such patients cannot survive for more than 20 years, according to them.
