LASHKARGAH (PAN): Twelve insurgents were killed by Afghan forces during a search operation in the Tarkha Nawar area of southern Helmand province, officials said on Friday.

A Taliban stronghold for the last five year area, Tarkha Nawa is located among Nawa, Nad Ali and Marja districts. It lies close to Lashkargah, the provincial capital.

The Afghan National Army (ANA) and police conducted the operation, the district police chief, Omar Jan Haqmal, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He called Tarkha Nawa the biggest poppy-producing area in the province. It has been the scene of several poppy-eradicating campaigns in recent months, he said.

As a result of the offensive that flushed out militants, security had been beefed up in the area, the police officer added. Seven weapons and thousands of bullets were seized.
