KABUL): The Ministry of Interior on Sunday said it had launched a campaign against tinted-glass vehicles and carrying weapons in the central capital Kabul.

Dark films had been removed from hundreds of vehicles and many others lacking registration number plates confiscated during the drive that began on Saturday, ministry spokesman Ghulam Siddique Siddiqui said.

He added they were implementing last week’s decision of the Cabinet that ordered carrying illegal weapons banned in Kabul and other provinces. Under the drive, he said tinted glasses of vehicles belonging to government officials were removed and cars without number plates confiscated.

The Interior Ministry and the National Directorate of Security (NDS) have been tasked to collect weapons from illegal armed men and register them and seize vehicles with dubious number plates, he said.

The campaign involved 101st Asmaee Zone Police personnel backed by 111st Afghan National Army military unit in Kabul.

Kabul traffic department, public order police, special police force, counterterrorism police, provincial police headquarters, military corps and provincial departments of NDS in Kabul and provinces have been engaged to proceed without any discrimination, Siddiqui said.

He asked government officials to cooperate with law enforcing agencies in implementation of the Cabinet decision.

Kabul deputy police chief, Brig. Gen. Mohammad Daud Amin, said tinted glasses were removed from hundreds of cars including those belonging to ministers and lawmakers. He confirmed many unregistered vehicles were confiscated in Kabul.
