KABUL): Two policemen were killed when a landmine ripped through their vehicle in southern Helmand province, officials said on Wednesday.

The roadside bombing took place in the Tarkha Nawar area of Marja district, where police had launched an anti-poppy campaign, the governor’s spokesman, Omar Zwak, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Elsewhere in the province, an armed rebel was killed and a policeman sustained injuries during a clash in Garmsir district. A security official said another fighter was killed during a gunbattle in the Sistani area of Marja.

In eastern Nangarhar province, two drug smugglers were detained in Behsud district with 17 kilograms of opium. The drugs smuggled from Kunar and were destined for Jalalabad, Nangarhar police spokesman Maj. Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal said.
