KABUL): President Hamid Karzai met his spymaster on Thursday, a day after his return from four months of medical treatment in the United States.

During the meeting at the Presidential Palace, Karzai expressed his happiness over National Directorate of Security (NDS) chief Asadullah Khalid’s recuperation.

A statement from Karzai’s office said the president wished Khalid success in his career. The NDS head, happy over his homecoming, said he was ready to serve the people.

On Wednesday, Khalid returned to Kabul from medical treatment in the US, where he was flown after being seriously wounded in a suicide attack on Dec.6.

A bomber — posing as a Taliban peace emissary — attacked him inside an NDS guest house in the Taimani neighbourhood of Kabul.

While in hospital, Khalid was visited by US President Barack Obama, who condemned the failed assassination attack and wished him speedy recovery.

Two days after the incident, President Hamid Karzai had said the suicide assault had been planned in Pakistan’s southwestern city of Quetta — an accusation rejected by Islamabad.
