GHAZNI CITY (PAN): Tight security measures have been put in place in southern Ghazni province ahead of a ceremony on Saturday when the provincial capital would start serving the year 2013 as the Capital of the Islamic Civilisation.

Police and other security personnel have been deployed to many locations in Ghazni to keep security for the ceremony, police chief Zarawar Zahid told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He asked Ghazni people to cooperate with police in maintaining security, adding Afghan forces had the ability to thwart any eventuality.

Zahid said many checkpoints had been established at the entrances to the city over the past one month. He said it was a matter of pride for the Afghans to see Ghazni city serving as the Asian capital of Islamic civilisation. He said people should attend the ceremony in great numbers to express their feelings.

Governor Musa Khan Akbarzada has urged militants to avoid violence on the day and let the Afghans to celebrate it.
