MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): The chancellor of a private university has been kidnapped by unidentified gunmen in northern Balkh province, officials said on Saturday.
The Maulana Jalaluddin Mohammad Balkhi University chancellor was kidnapped late on Saturday, said Lt. Gen. Abdul Razeq Qadiri, the provincial deputy police chief.
He identified the abducted person as Zareef Khan, who was on his way to Kamarband area inspect an under construction building for the university’s branch when unknown gunmen intercepted his vehicle and kidnapped him.
The kidnappers also fired at his vehicle, injuring his driver, who was later taken to the Civil Hospital, he said.
But Jan Mohammad Jaihoon, a lecturer at the university, said the driver had succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. He had no idea why Zareef Khan was kidnapped.
Police have launched an investigation into the saga, but the motive behind it remained unknown.
