KABUL member on Monday revealed 80 lawmakers had received bribes from ministers summoned over under-spending development funds in 2011.

The revelation comes as deputy speaker Mirwais Yasini told the house that the issue of alleged bribery had been discussed at a meeting held behind closed doors.

Abdul Wadood Paiman, a lawmaker from northern Kunduz province, attended the meeting. He told reporters 80 members had accepted bribes from ministers over the summoning issue. He said some MPs had been promised foreign trips after being invited to lavish dinners. He said the meeting behind closed doors discussed the bribery and other issues.

The assembly has summoned 11 ministers for failing to spent less than 50 percent of fund allocations to their ministries in 2011 for development purposes. All those appeared before the house had been able to satisfy lawmakers and their explanations endorsed by a majority of members.

Some MPs suggested four ministers who did not hold their current portfolios in 2011 be excluded from the list of summoned ministers.

Paiman said they had prepared a list carrying names of those involved in accepting bribes from the ministers summoned. The names would be disclosed after more meetings on the issue, he added

“First we will ask them not to repeat such illegal actions, but if they did so, their names will be disclosed to the media,” Paiman said.
