JALALABAD (PAN): Nangarhar University students on Monday rallied against civilian deaths in a US airstrike in neighbouring Kunar province and the erection of a security gate by Pakistani forces on Afghan soil near the eastern border.

The April 6 airstrike killed 11 children, four women and two men in Shegal, with periodic cross border shelling into Kunar by Pakistani forces continue to take place.

The protest demonstration in Daronta near Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar, was attended by hundreds of students who chanted slogans like “death to the US”, “death to Pakistan“. They said the Afghans could no longer tolerate US atrocities.

“All students are shocked and saddened by the deaths of children in the airstrike and we ask the government to prevent such attacks by US forces,” an education faculty student, Khalilullah, said.

Pakistan continued to shell Afghan villages in Kunar and its military had established buildings by encroaching on Afghanistan‘s land in Goshta, another student, Naseer Ahmad, said.

He said, if armed, the students were ready to wage a war against the Pakistani forces for occupying the country’s territory.

The protesters also burnt an effigy US President Barack Obama and the US flag during the hour long rally. They also blocked the Kabul-Jalalabad highway.

At the end, the students issued a resolution asking foreign troops to leave Afghanistan and Pakistan to stop rocket attacks on Kunar and erecting a security gate in the limits of Goshta district.

The students condemned the Kunar airstrike, asking President Karzai not to stay calm until its perpetrators were brought to justice.
