Paktia elder killed, his wife injured in operation

Apr 17, 2013 - 19:41

KHOST CITY (PANinfo-icon): Foreign troops killed a tribal elder and injured his wife and detained four other people during an operation in the southeastern province of Paktia, an official said on Wednesday.

The operation involving ISAFinfo-icon troops was conducted in Patula village of Samkani district, the governor’s spokesman, Rohullah Samoon, told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Hajji Mirza was killed and his wife was wounded by the troops who took away another four villagers, including a brother of Mirza and two employees of the Afghan Wireless Communication Company (AWCC). The AWCC workers were installing a tower when they were detained.

Paktia provincial office said the operation was against agreements signed between the government and NATOinfo-icon-led troops.

However, ISAF said in a statement it was a joint operation with Afghan forces in Samkani against a Haqqani networkinfo-icon leader. One insurgent was killed during the operation, the statement said, accusing the rebel leader of having operational control over IED operations in multiple districts throughout Paktia and Khost provinces.

The statement said three other suspected insurgents were detained and two AK-47s, one pistol and ammunition were seized during the operation.
