MAZAR-I-SHARIF (PAN): Scores of girl athletes participated in a race against corruption in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of northern Balkh province, on Sunday.

More than 100 girls ran from the Shaheed Zabihullah Square to the Hazrat Ali (RA) Mausoleum, covering a distance of two kilometres.

Mohammad Asif Alami, the Balkh Olympic Department spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News they had organised the event with the support of civil society organisations.

The objective behind the race was to discourage corruption, violence against women protection, the official said.

Mubaraka, who won the competition, said she was happy over proving her mettle in her first public appearance. She praised the organisers for affording her the chance to display her talent. Hakima Jan came second.

Mursal Jan, who finished third, said her participation was inspired by efforts at combating violence against women and injustice. She called graft and drugs a threat to the country.
