10 insurgents killed in clashes, blasts
Armed rebels attacked the district headquarters building and nearby villages in the Hesarak district of Nangarhar, sparking a fierce gun-battle with security forces before dawn.
Police spokesman Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal told Pajhwok Afghan News six attackers were killed after police returned fire. Security personnel escaped unhurt, but a woman was injured in fire from the rebels.
A Hesarak resident, Ismail, said the retreating insurgents also fired gunshots at civilian homes, injuring a woman. The gunbattle that broke out around 2am lasted for two and a half hours.
In Laghman, four militants were killed during separate incidents. The governor's spokesman, Sarhadi Zwak, said one rebel was killed when a landmine he was planting in Gulkari area on the outskirts of Mehtarlam went off prematurely late on Tuesday night.
Another three fighters were killed in a similar incident on the highway between Mehtarlam and Alingar district.
