KABUL): Moscow trains 50 to 100 Afghan drug police officers every year, Russia’s Federal Drug Control Service director said on Friday.

“We prepare 50-100 drug policemen every year at Russian training centers and also provide on-site training in Central Asian cities,” Viktor Ivanov said.

Russian Legal Information Agency (RAPSI) quoted him as saying that Moscow groomed drug policemen for Afghanistan.

Backing Russia’s economic presence in Afghanistan, Ivanov said: “There is strong competition out there for developing local mineral resources.”

He said China had been given access to Afghanistan’s huge copper deposits, with Japan, the US and several European countries following suit. “Russia shouldn’t lag behind.”
