MAHMOOD RAQI/KHOST CITY (PAN and showed their willingness to defend the country.

Pakistan has been firing missiles into Afghanistan’s border areas over the past couple of years, but the situation deteriorated in recent days after its forces established a gate on Afghan soil in the Goshta district of eastern Nangarhar province.

Nearly 15,000 residents marched from Deh Baba Ali area to Mahmood Raqi, the provincial capital, against the Pakistani attacks, chanting “death to Pakistan” and “long live Afghan forces”.

A participant and organiser of the protest, Mohammad Iqbal Sapi, said the Afghans had been able to defend their land bravely and remained ready to fight against foreign invaders.

Kapisa residents were willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with their security forces in defending their homeland, said another protestor, Shukrullah Mohammadi.

The protestors issued a resolution, voicing stout support to Afghan forces and asking the government to adopt a clear policy on aggression from all neighbours, including Pakistan.

They also asked the United Nations to prevent foreign meddling in Afghanistan. The resolution urged the government to promote posthumously the slain border policeman, Mohammad Qasim, to the general’s rank.

Elsewhere in the country, 5,000 students of the Sheikh Zayed University staged a protest against Pakistan in southeastern Khost province, where the demonstrators chanted slogans lionising Afghan forces.

While accusing Pakistan of following a policy of hypocrisy toward Afghanistan, they blamed the international community for doing nothing to address problems between the neighbours.

One of the protestors, Rahmatullah, said Pakistan was the biggest enemy of Afghanistan, asking the public to work for national unity. He added the Afghans had the capacity to defend their motherland.
