ASADABAD (PAN): An American soldier was ordered on Monday to leave eastern Kunar province after he insulted a portrait of President Hamid Karzai, the governor said.

Syed Fazlullah Wahidi told Pajhwok Afghan News the US soldier had twice insulted Karzai’s picture installed on a road in Asadabad, the provincial capital, on Monday morning and Sunday evening.

The American pelted stones at the portrait installed in the Shahidan square, Wahidi said, adding a commission headed by the Kunar police chief had been assigned to investigate the incident.

He said the commission lodged a complaint with the US forces’ commander in Kunar and American embassy staff and they apologised for the incident. The US commander was requested to expel the soldier from Kunar within 24 hours.
