KABUL): President Hamid Karzai on Friday telephoned former Pakistani prime minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, regretting the kidnapping of his son at an election rally in Multan.
Karzai hoped that Ali Haider Gilani, a election candidate of the Pakistan People’s Party and son of Gilani, would be rescued soon, a statement from the Presidential Palace said.
Gunmen on a motorcycle attacked the public meeting and seized Gilani’s son on Thursday. His personal secretary, Mohiuddin, was killed by the assailants, who also wounded one of his guards along with four other people.
Karzai also wrote a letter to cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Tehrik Insaaf (PTI) party, who suffered head and back injuries in a fall from a lifter in Lahore earlier in the week.
In his letter, the president wished the PTI leader speedy recovery. Currently under medical treatment at a Lahore hospital, Khan’s party is a leading contender in Saturday’s parliamentary election in Pakistan.
