KADAHAR CITY (PAN): With the establishment of five more factories at the industrial park in southern Kandahar province, a number of people have found work opportunities, overcoming their financial woes, an official said on Tuesday.

The newly established factories include shoe-making, cooking oil and steel melting, said Asadullah, Kandahar Industrial Parks Director.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News during an exclusive interview that raw materials for the factories arrived from Thailand and other countries, keeping in view their good quality.

“Currently there are 72 factories in the industrial park and another 28 factories are being established,” he said.

He said products of Kandahar factories were not only supplied throughout Afghanistan.

He said quality of products was being closely monitored, adding they had sealed three factories for low-quality goods.

The director cited insufficient electricity a major concern, saying the park was supplied 10 megawatts of power since 2011 under a contract with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), but the contract would end in September this year.

Dilapidated and unpaved roads leading to the park had long been a hurdle to the factories’ operations, he noted, urging the government to address their concerns in this regard.

Kandahar Brishna Sherkat official Asadullah Ayoub Farooqi promised continued power supply to the industrial park.
