KABUL): A fire erupted at an under-construction part of the Pul-i-Charkhi prison on the eastern outskirts of Kabul on Wednesday afternoon, an official said.
But firefighters managed to control the blaze that resulted from an electric short-circuit at about 2pm, the director-general of prisons said.
Brig. Gen. Amir Mohammad Jamshedi told Pajhwok Afghan News the building for a defence ministry detention centre was being constructed in front of the Pul-i-Charkhi jail.
He linked the incident to firm workers’ carelessness, saying that building materials, including wood, cement and sand were damaged by the fire.
Kabul Fire Brigade chief, Mohammad Kazim, said firefighters managed to control the blaze at 3.20pm. He also ties the fire to an electric short-circuit that happened during welding.
Earlier, two security officials said a fuel tanker belonging to a private firm caught fire inside the Russian-built prison.
