HERAT CITY (PAN): The power utility on Thursday said it had installed two new electricity transformers that could provide 50 megawatts of electricity each to residents of western Herat province.

Costing 117 million afghanis, the transformers have been bought with funds from the Brishna Shirkat’s development budget, the company’s Herat director Abdul Raziq Samadi told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He hoped the installation would help improve power infrastructure in Herat, where 100 megawatts of electricity is imported from neighbouring Turkmenistan and Iran.

The official said the transformers would strengthen the power system in Herat city and overcome power deficit.

As part of the project, Samadi said new computerised billing system and revenue collection method would be put in place in line with contemporary approach, a project that would exclusively cost six million afghanis.

Herat governor Duad Shah Saba said previously they had only two power transformers that lacked the capacity to meet people’s needs. He hoped the newly installed transformers would resolve electricity related problems to a great extent.

Sharif Khan, who lives in the seventh police district of Herat city, said it was a matter of pleasure that more transformers had been added to the current system. However, he said the power department was rife with corruption that needed urgent attention to be banished.

Elsewhere in the country, a new power transformer was installed in eastern Laghman province, benefitting hundreds of families in a township called Sultan Ghazi.

Laghman Brishna Shirkat chief Muhibur Rahman said the department had launched efforts at equal distribution of electricity across the province. However, he complained the progress at a snail’s pace was a result of personnel shortage.
