KABUL (PAN): Education Minister Ghulam Farooq Wardak on Saturday urged the international community to provide his ministry $3 billion in aid for the construction of 8000 schools, as three million children would be enrolled over next two years.

Wardak made the appeal during a visit to the Aysha Durrani High School in Kabul along with visiting UNESCO’s Director General Irina Bokova.

He said the visit was aimed at highlighting the existing challenges hindering efforts at promotion of education in Afghanistan and seeking UNESCO's help in bringing about improvement to education quality

Wardak urged the international community to provide his ministry with $3 billion that would be used on the construction of school buildings.

He said currently more than 10.5 million students were studying in 16,000 schools across the country, with three millions children remained deprived of education.

However, he said the deprived children would be enrolled to schools over next two years. He said Afghanistan had attained significant achievements in education sector, something considered a matter of pride for the Afghans.

Bokova said UNESCO would continue to cooperate with Afghanistan in area of education, saying almost 63 million children in the world were deprived of education, including three million in Afghanistan. She said the UNESCO would step up efforts at overcoming education deprivation in Afghanistan.
