Pakistani trust to treat 200 Afghan cleft lip patients

KABUL): A Pakistani trust is organising a surgical mission at the Isteqlal Hospital in Kabul from May 18 -24 to perform free of cost surgeries on more than 200 cleft lip and palate patients.

CLAPP Trust Lahore Pakistan with support from a German NGO, Deutsche Cleft Kindehilfe e.V. (DCKH).

It said the mission was to provide free of cost surgical treatment to more than 200 Afghan patients at the Isteqlal Hospital.

DCKH is sponsoring the cost of surgeries for the Afghan cleft patients, the trust said, adding a 22-member team of plastic surgeons, anesthetist, paramedical staff headed by Prof. Dr. Ghulam Qadir Fayyaz is visiting Kabul to perform the surgeries.

It said the Isteqlal Hospital, the Afghan Ministry of Public Health were partnering with the CLAPP Trust by providing hospital facilities, equipment and all kind of logistic support and Dr. Muhammad Ali Ehsan, Director Isteqlal Hospital, was personally taking care of all the arrangements.

“Muslim Hands and Rotary Clubs in Kabul are also helping this mission by providing accommodation and logistics supporting for the CLAPP team and to make this mission a great success.”

A seminar was organized at Isteqlal Hospital on Sunday to create awareness among local communities about the Cleft Lip and Palate deformity.

More than 100 people have been invited to the seminar including Afghan public health minister Dr. Suraya Dalil, German Ambassador, diplomats, representatives from civil society, NGOs and media.
