Khost council office closed for security fears

Khost council office closed for security fears

May 20, 2013 - 22:02

KHOST CITY (PANinfo-icon): The provincial council office in southeastern Khost province was closed by its members on Monday, saying most of police guards keeping security for the office had been called back to their headquarters.

Syed Karim Khan Khaksar, the council chief, told a press conference in Khost City they closed the office after the provincial police headquarters called back most of police guards despite their repeated calls for increase in the number of guards.

"If the government fails to pay any head to the concerns of council members, we would not resume our duty," Khaksar warned.

The council's deputy chairman, Murad Khan Mangal, also confirmed the closure, saying they feared security threats. He said most of police guards who would previously show their presence were now not available.

However, deputy police chief Col. Mohammad Yaqoub said in line with the interior ministry’s procedure they had provided four guards to the council office.

A suicide bomber on foot attacked the Baghlan council head on Monday, killing him and more than a dozen others.
