BAMYAN CITY (PAN): Gun-wielding robbers, who stabbed a mechanic to death and shot dead a shopkeeper, were jailed for 20 years in central Bamyan province on Thursday.

The eight gangsters were awarded 20 years rigorous imprisonment each by an appellant court at an open trial in Bamyan City, the provincial capital.

Security forces arrested the individuals three months ago after they stabbed a mechanic to death and murdered a shopkeeper in Bamyan City.  Pistols, knives and military uniforms were recovered from them.

The court verdict came in the presence of dozens of citizens and representatives of judicial organs. Judge Attaullah Tamkin said the verdict was based on evidence brought before the court.

During the hearing, Public Prosecutor Fakhruddin prayed the court to hand down the death penalty to the robbers because they killed two people and posed a security threat.

Defence counsel Najibullah said his clients would decide later whether or not to challenge the judgment.

Another six people who had no defence lawyer told the court they had been falsely indicted and had no role in any armed robbery.
