JALALABAD (PAN work on roads measuring five kilometres and canals was launched in the capital of eastern Nangarhar province on Wednesday.

Mayor Lal Agha Kakar, who inaugurated the project, told Pajhwok Afghan News that streets in Jalalabad city would also be constructed.

He said the reconstruction project was estimated to cost $700,000 which had been provided by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

He said the project was being implemented by a local non-governmental organisation called “Lara” which assists the municipality in development projects.

Kakar said 60 percent of roads in Jalalabad had been constructed, but still many roads, streets and canals needed to be reconstructed.

The municipality department has been in contract with various NGOs to assist the department in constructing roads, canals and streets, the mayor said.

Deputy governor Mohammad Hanif Gardiwal blamed civic problems in Jalalabad on growing populations. He urged aid-giving agencies to assist the provincial government in dealing with the civic problems in Jalalabad.
