ISLAMABAD (PAN on Saturday lodged a strong protest with the United States against Friday’s drone strike in North Waziristan, the first since the Nawaz Sharif government’s coming into power.

Hours seven suspected militants were killed in the latest attack, US Charge d’ Affaires Ambassador Richard Hoagland was summoned to the Foreign Office in Islamabad.

The US Charge d’ Affaires was told the government strongly condemns the drone strikes which are a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the Foreign Office.

A statement from the foreign ministry said: “The importance of bringing an immediate end to drone strikes was emphasised. Hoagland was summoned on the instructions of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and was handed a demarche in this regard.

On Friday night the drone hit a house in the Shawal area of Waziristan near the Afghanistan border. Seven people inside the compound were killed, the state-run Pakistan Television reported.

In his inaugural address to the National Assembly on Wednesday, Sharif called for an immediate end to drone strikes inside Pakistan.

In late May, a similar attack killed the Pakistani Taliban‘s second-in-command, Waliur Rehman, and six others in a major blow to the militant group.
