JALALABAD (PAN): Abrupt water discharges from a dam and flooding have washed away crops on hundreds of acres of land in several parts of eastern Nangarhar province, an official said on Friday.
Water discharges from the Sarobi dam damaged maize, paddies and other crops in Kama, Surkhrod, Lalpura, Momand Dara and Behsud districts, the governor’s spokesman said.
Abdul Zia Ahmadzai told Pajhwok Afghan News that possible life losses were prevented, as the authorities had informed residents two days ago about the water release from the dam.
He indicated a high-level emergency meeting at the governor’s house later in the day might take up the issue. The losses would be assessed and a decision taken on compensating the victims, he suggested.
A resident of Lalpura, Hakimullah, floods in a local river had damaged crops and fish eateries in the district. Residents had suffered losses, he said, adding the Kunar River was also overflowing.
