KABUL): An Afghan army sergeant on Wednesday received a British military ceremonial sword in recognition of his exceptional performance during officer training in the UK.

British Ambassador to Afghanistan Sir Richard Stagg presented the prestigious award from the Royal Military Academy to Sgt Hashmat Azimi, the British Embassy in Kabul said in a statement.

“Sgt Azimi was up against some of the very best officer cadets in the world training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. The recognition he received of his exceptional performance marks him out as a truly world class soldier,” said Stagg while presenting the sword to the Afghan officer.

“Sgt Azimi is an excellent example of the professionalism, heroism and effectiveness of the Afghan armed forces that we see today. I wish to congratulate Sgt Azimi on his achievement.”

The Commandant of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst,  Major General Tim Evans CBE DSO said: “Sgt Hashmat Azimi was a tremendous student at the Royal Military Academy; his motivation, professionalism, and operational experience were an inspiration to the other Officer Cadets.

In recognition for his exceptional performance, the commandant said Azim was awarded the Hobson Horse for exceptional achievement – a prestigious prize at the Award Ceremony at Sandhurst.
