SHIBERGHAN (PAN): Hundreds of supporters of Abdul Rashid Dostum, the Uzbek community leader, on Wednesday protested against the provincial governor in northern Jawzjan province.

The protesters accused Governor Mohammad Alam Saee of opening fire at Dostum two days ago when the ethnic minority leader visited his residence in Shiberghan, the provincial capital.

They chanted slogans like “death to the governor”, and “we don’t want irresponsible governor”.

The demonstrators, who emerged from a guest house owned by Dostum, asked the central government to fire the governor for his attack on their leader.

Dostum’s Jumbish party leader Kinja Kargar in his address to the rally said that party supporters could not tolerate any attack on their leader.

He demanded an investigation into the attack on the Jumbish leader by a high level delegation.

Dostum allegedly entered the house of the governor with his guards two days ago. Saee said the gunmen opened fire after entering his house. His guars traded fire with the militiamen for 15 minutes, he said. “Later Dostum was encircled by his guards and took him away.”

But the party said Dostum visited the governor’s residence for a meeting that was cancelled due to some “misunderstanding,” according to Kargar.

Saee later claimed Dostam threatened him to cut ties with the government over the telephone a night before the attack.

“Corruption in Jawzjan is on its peak, insurgents are inching close to the entrances to Shiberghan, so we want the governor to improve the security,” one of the protesters, Maulvi Mohammad Sharif, said.

The demonstrators issued a resolution letter, accusing Saee of attacking Dostum and asking the government to bring him to justice. “If our demands are not considered, we will continue to protest,” it warned.

When contacted, the governor said the protest had been organised by a handful of Dostum’s supporters who could not represent the people of Jawzjan.

Saee said most participants were dragged into the rally against their will by Dostum men.

“I have no interest in the governorship, but I would accept the decision of my seniors,” Saee said.
