A police official said that a group of about 1,000 Afghan and Pakistani Taliban fighters attacked the Bargi Matal district in eastern Nuristan province on Thursday.
Col. Ghulam Farooq, the district’s deputy police chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News that clashes between the attackers and police were still ongoing. Four attackers and a prayer leader have been killed and a dozen others, including a woman and a local policeman, injured during the clashes, he added.
The insurgents also attacked police in Dawab and Norgram districts, killing five policemen, according to Col. Farooq, who said the attackers also suffered casualties in retaliatory firing.
In Laghman, one militant was killed and four others wounded during a clash with police in the Alingar district on Wednesday night.
The clash broke out after the Taliban attacked a police checkpoint, the governor’s spokesman, Sarhadi Zhwak, said.
One of two policemen injured during the 30-minute clash was in critical condition, he said.
