KABUL): Residents of Ghazni on Monday said the security situation had improved after the deployment of the Afghan Local Police (ALP) to several parts of the southern province.

The ALP had set up 13 checkpoints in Qara Bagh district, forcing the Taliban from the area and providing security for the people, resident Syed Ahmad told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Since the start of a public uprising and ALP deployment a year ago to Andar district, insecurity had considerably decreased, agreed another resident, Khairullah.

The fighters previously attacked security checkpoints and the main bazaar in broad daylight, but now rebel assaults on public places have significantly fallen, according to him.

“We feel more secure after the arrival of local policemen in our district,” remarked a dweller of Maqur district, Abdul Hameed, who said the government-controlled area had considerably expanded and officials were able to visit any part of the district.

Provincial Council Secretary Malim Sher Jan confirmed many areas had been cleared of Taliban by ALP members. As a result, he said, the people could freely travel across Ghazni.

Provincial Council member from Andar, Amanullah Kamrani, also linked the improving security situation in the district to ALP deployment. The Taliban ran propaganda against police, but the people would not be misled, he said.

ALP members are active in nine districts — Qarabagh, Maqur, Gilan, Aab Band, Giru. Andar, Deh Yak, Waghaz and Ajristan.

The local policemen were successfully discharging their duties, bringing many areas under the control of the government, acknowledged the provincial police chief, Brig. Gen. Zarawar Zahid.

He said they planned deploying policemen to Zankhan and Khwaja Omari districts of the province, where 1,500 ALP members are currently working.
