Midwifery training begins in Uruzgan

TIRINKOT/JALALABAD (PAN has begun in the central province of Uruzgan, the governor’s office said on Monday.

Aimed to reduce mother and child mortality rates, the training course is being attended by 76 midwives and nurses, according to a statement from the governor’s house.

Funded by the Paris-based Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED), the course will help extend health facilities to remote districts of the province.

Fifty midwives and 26 nurses from different districts and the provincial capital would be trained for two years, Director of Public Health Khan Agha Miakhel told Pajhwok Afghan News.

On completing their training, the health workers provide services to residents in their respective areas, the director said, hailing the course as a key step toward cutting mortality rates.

Separately, 200 people of Nazian, Pachiragam and Lalpura districts of eastern Nangarhar province completed vocational training in mobile and power generator repairs, carpentry, masonry, tailoring and painting.

Director of Martyr, Disabled, Labour and Social Affairs Fazal Hakim Sherzad said the courses were conducted at a cost of $200,000. Necessary instruments were purchased for the graduates.

The project involved the people who renounced violence and joined the government-led peace process, said Malik Nazeer, the provincial head of the High Peace Council.
