KABUL to issue arrest orders for MP Allah Gul Mujahid, who was accused of grabbing government land, as well as involvement in murder and kidnaps.

At a press conference, the Kabul crime branch chief, Brig. Gen. Mohammad Zahir, alleged Japanese engineers who had gone to Deh Sabz district last week were detained by Mujahid’s armed supporters.

Later, police went to the district along with two prosecutors to release the engineers and arrest Jannat Gul, a brother of Mujahid. The lawmaker’s men opened fire on police, injuring four of them, he said. Seven of the gunmen were wounded in return fire.

The legislator’s men also fired on a filling station and police sought assistance from Afghan soldiers to control the situation, he said. As many as130 bags of ammonium nitrate — used in homemade bomb — and some weapons were recovered from the filling station, owned by Mujahid.

“Mujahid and his brother are involved in land grab, murder, abductions and involvement in 50 percent of organised crimes in Kabul,” the crime branch chief alleged.

Police could not arrest Mujahid because he enjoyed immunity. When police tried to arrest his brother, he sought assistance from locals, who stood up against the law-enforcers, the official claimed, urging the lower house to issue arrest orders for Mujahid.

But the lawmaker denied the allegations, calling them a plot to defame him.
