GHAZNI CITY (PAN):  The contract for building an airport in southern Ghazni province was awarded on Tuesday to a company that would implement the project in a year, officials said.

Aerial travel facility would be provided to thousands of people from Ghazni and neighbouring provinces with the construction of the airport, Deputy Governor Mohammad Ali Ahmadi told Pajhwok Afghan News.

He said the airport’s boundary wall was already 80 per cent complete and the remaining part would be constructed in the next few months. The wall and two runways would be built at a cost of $3.5 million.

Work on the terminal would be launched later, the deputy governor said, calling it a big project for 2013. The scheme was delayed due to lack of attention.

The construction of the airport would boost the economy of the people, hoped the provincial head of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI), Abdul Mateen Qalandari.

Construction work on the airport was scheduled to be completed two years ago, but the officials concerned failed to meet their promises, he said.
