KABUL): The Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG) on Monday arranged a day-long training workshop for newly-appointed district chiefs at its office in Kabul.

IDLG head Abdul Khaliq Farahi congratulated the district governors and asked them to begin their duties with a strong sense of commitment and honesty.

He stressed counter-corruption measures at the local level, saying the new district chiefs must try to create an accountable and transparent administration.

Farahi called district governors as central government’s representatives and asked them to remove the gap between citizens and rulers and deliver all possible services to the public.

In a statement from his office, Farahi asked the district chiefs to send their reports to the IDLG headquarters regularly so they were informed of the situation at the district level.

The participants referred to security challenges, accommodation and lack of equipment problems. Lack of district centre buildings, transportation and delays in salaries were the common issues that all district governors raised.

Deputy Director Farid Mamondzai answered the district governors’ questions and said the IDLG was trying to facilitate them with better equipment and facilities.

“We have purchased and distributed 100 vehicles for the district governor and 60 more vehicles are to be purchased and distributed. Twenty new district centre buildings will be constructed in next two years.”
