KABUL): President Hamid Karzai has pardoned an alleged Nepali spy facing 20 years in jail, the Nepal embassy in Islamabad said on Monday.

Tilak Bahadur Thapa Magar, a Nepali national has been convicted of spying, was given clemency on Kathmandu’s request.

Ex-premier Baburam Bhattarai, in a letter to the Afghan government, had requested amnesty for Magar, who hails from Tanahun district, the Nepali embassy said in a statement.

Magar returned to Kathmandu via Dubai on Sunday. Afghan officials drove him to Kabul airport after he was released from jail.

He was arrested on April 19 by Afghan intelligence operatives in Helmand province where he worked as a security guard.
