JALALABAD (PAN): A female schoolteacher on Tuesday accused a member of the Nangarhar provincial council and her husband of threatening her with death.

Najiba, a teacher at the Experimental School in Jalalabad, told Pajhwok Afghan News that public representative Amin and her spouse had been warning her.

She said three daughters and a son of Amin studied at the school, which the provincial council member’s husband would visit all too often to get his children higher marks.

“I would stop him from visiting the school on a daily basis. When told that girls are studying here, he exchanged harsh words with me,” the teacher added.

The man insulted her before issuing the threat: “I’ll just order my bodyguard to spray 100 bullets into you.” The provincial council later dispatched to the Education Department a letter, calling Najiba and one of her colleagues “immoral”.

She complained “this drama” had been ongoing for several months and she could no longer put up with its continuance. The situation has been a source of discomfort for Najiba.

School Principal Farida Azimi also blasted Amin and her husband for mounting pressure on teachers in an attempt to get their children higher marks.

Azimi confirmed receiving a letter from the council, saying she was ashamed of revealing the memo’s content.  Amin had written to the Education Department to hide her threats, said another teacher.

“Najiba was threatened with death, but when the couple realised the issue was slipping out of control, she accused the teacher of immorality,” the source added.

Education Department spokesman Mohammad Asif Shinwari confirmed receiving the letter. “We won’t pressures from anyone on teachers and students.” They would investigate the issue, he said.

But Amin said the accusation against her was a plot aimed to denigrate her. She refused to say anything more on the issue.
