HERAT CITY (PAN): The governor of the western Herat province on Wednesday acknowledged government employees could not attend offices in Shindand district due to insecurity.

Residents complain they have to travel to Herat City, the provincial capital, in connection with their day-to-day problems that could not be addressed at the local level.

Governor Fazlullah Wahidi, speaking to Pajhwok Afghan News, linked the absenteeism issue to fragile security, weak governance and lack of proper facilities in the district.

A farmer from the district, Mohammad Karim, said residents had to travel for 140 kilometres to reach Herat City to meet a judge or prosecutor because the officials were not present in Shindand.

The newly-appointed district chief, Lal Mohammad Omarzai, said the problem was gradually being resolved and officials had started attending offices. He promised all possible efforts at reopening the district court and the prosecutor office.
