KABUL’s rights in the war-torn country.

UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women head Nicole Ameline, addressing a news conference in Geneva, voiced concern at Afghan women’s situation.

She warned the global fraternity would fail it did not preserve the rights of women after having devoted so much energy, resources and support in the country.

“We are worried about Afghanistan because we’re at a decisive moment,” she was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency. Ameline also referred to the Afghan government’s assurance that women would be able to take part in the peace talks.

A report from the committee condemned the rising level of violence, including domestic abuse, rape and stoning, Afghan women were facing. The report also denounced forced marriages and the failure to prosecute perpetrators of violence.
