KABUL): The Afghan government on Saturday denounced as cowardly the terrorist attack on the Indian consulate in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province.

The bomb-gun attack resulted in the death and injury of more than 20 innocent Afghans men, women and mostly children.

“We condemn this morning’s cowardly and heinous terrorist attack in Jalalabad against the Indian consulate in the strongest possible terms,” said Foreign Minister Dr. Zalmai Rassoul.

“These terrorists achieved nothing except shedding the blood of innocent Afghan civilians who were going about their daily lives during this blessed month of Ramadan,” he remarked.

In a statement, he asked the attackers and their financial sponsors to realise that they could not shake the close and strong bond of friendship and partnership between Afghanistan and India.

“This cowardly act only reinforces the Afghan nation’s firm resolve to defeat the alien phenomenon of terrorism and extremism exported to Afghanistan from outside,” the minister continued.

Rassoul said the Afghan government and people were grateful to India for its steadfast friendship and generous contributions to Afghanistan’s security and reconstruction over the past decade.

“We will continue to further deepen and broaden cooperation along the full spectrum of our relationship with the Republic of India in the years to come,” he concluded.
