KABUL (PAN): Following his inauguration, Iran’s new President Hassan Rohani met his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai in Tehran on Sunday afternoon.

The Iranian leader thanked the visiting dignitary for attending his oath-taking ceremony, according to the IRNA news agency.

Given their longstanding religious and cultural commonalities, the two leaders agreed the neighbours had good prospects of further deepening their bilateral relations and cooperation in diverse spheres.

According to the report, the Persian-speaking nations — Afghanistan, Iran and Tajikistan — could achieve progress in different sectors on a fast-track basis through cooperation.    

At the meeting, Karzai greeted Rohani on his assumption of office and hoped the leadership change would herald a new dawn of progress and prosperity Iran.

He commended Tehran’s assistance to Afghanistan over the years, saying Iran always realised the plight of the neighbour and stood by it through difficult times.

Earlier in the day, arrived in Tehran to attend Rohani’s inauguration. Foreign Minister Dr. Zalmai Rassoul and National Security Advisor Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta are accompanying him.

With the notable exception of the US and Israel, Iran invited world President Asif Ali Zardari also attended the event.

President Karzai of Afghanistan, after the dinner meeting with Dr. Rohani, flew back to Kabul. His office said the presidents agreed to further boost Tehran-Kabul cooperation.
