KABUL and Iran have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on enhancing military and strategic cooperation, President Hamid Karzai’s office said on Monday.

The MoU, calling for improved cooperation between media outlets of the two countries, was signed by Afghan National Security Advisor Rangin Dadfar Spanta and Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Saeed Jalili.

A statement from the Presidential Palace in Kabul said the accord was signed on Sunday, when Karzai attended the inauguration of Iran’s new President Dr. Hassan Rohani.

The statement quoted Jalili as saying Iran wanted a secure, peaceful and developed Afghanistan. He called MoU signing an important step toward cementing the relationship between the neighbours.

The MoU is the first-ever to be signed between the neighbours on bilateral cooperation.
