KABUL’s first national social media summit, opened on Monday for the Sept 22-23 event that would bring together over 200 speakers and participants from all provinces, organisers said.

The event will consist of networking and community building between Afghanistan’s most active social media users, speeches from prominent social media experts from inside and outside of Afghanistan, as well as skills-building workshops.

Paiwand will feature simultaneous translation in Dari, Pashto, and English, with live broadcast in Afghanistan on Radio Nawa and Radio Killid, Saba TV, online via live streaming, as well as wide coverage on 8AM Daily Newspaper and Pajhwok Afghan News Agency.

“There has been a significant increase in usage of the social media among the Afghans over the past few years, and it has been instrumental in eliminating many negative perceptions, including ethnic and religious divisions,” said Danish Karokhel, Pajhwok Afghan News Editor-in-Chief.

He added social media had the power to help Afghans fight corruption, human rights abuses and crimes.

“Social media has proven its power in educating people and in empowering youth movements and the most rapid information provider at the moment,” said Parwiz Kawa, the Director of 8AM, the widely read daily and a supporter of the summit.

The focus of Paiwand’s marketing and outreach efforts is placed on social media, especially Facebook.  Interested individuals throughout Afghanistan will be required to fill out and submit an online application form to attend the summit in Kabul.

The team behind the summit discussed using traditional media to advertise the application, but keeping in view the theme of social media, most of the marketing activities will be conducted online.

This is a novel approach to advertising in Afghanistan, where billboards and radio/TV ads are still the norm.

Eileen Guo, the Summit Director, explained the decision: “This event will be unlike anything that Afghanistan has ever seen, and we want our marketing efforts to reflect that.”
