KABUL): Obstacles to the New Kabul township project would be removed and the project would be inaugurated in a week, the Ministry of Interior said on Saturday.
A master plan for the project, the biggest housing and development scheme in the country, was approved by the Cabinet in 2009.
Kabul City currently has the capacity for one million people, while its population has risen to 4.5 million.
The project will be implemented in the Deh Sabz district of Kabul and the Bagram town of central Parwan province.
A statement from MoI said Interior Minister Mujtaba Patang and members of the New Kabul Project board had agreed to initiate work on the plan next week.
Residents of Deh Sabz should leave the area demarcated for the scheme within a week, the ministry said. The board members hoped the project would create job opportunities for thousands of residents.
Executive Chief of New Kabul Ghulam Sakhi Hasanzada said $100 million would be received in aid from donor countries by the end of the current solar year for the project.
